WASHINGTON - With the New Year approaching, the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign is reminding Americans to Resolve to be Ready in 2010. Resolve to be Ready is an annual initiative encouraging individuals, families, businesses and communities to make preparedness a part of their New Year resolutions.
“This holiday season, as family and friends come together to celebrate, it is also a great time to talk about the importance of being prepared,” said Administrator Fugate. “Families can start small, by ensuring they have a communications plan in place before an emergency happens, a little bit of planning can make all the difference in an emergency. Citizen Corps is a network of volunteers and organizations that utilize the skills and abilities of our citizens to prepare our community for emergencies, disasters, and crime. It is administered federally by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and in our state, by the ServeNebraska -- the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission.
The Citizen Corps initiative was developed after September 11, 2009 to increase the preparedness of citizens to respond in emergencies and the number of volunteers who are trained to support first responders. First responders cannot get to everyone immediately so the Citizen Corps program encourages citizens to be ready to help themselves, their families and their neighbors in the first 72-96 hours of an emergency.
Citizen Corps asks you to embrace the personal responsibility to be prepared; to get training in first aid and emergency skills; and to volunteer to support local emergency responders, disaster relief, and community safety. Everyone can do something to help make our families and our communities safer through:
- Personal responsibility: Developing a household preparedness plan and disaster supplies kits, observing home health and safety practices, implementing disaster mitigation measures, and participating in crime prevention and reporting.
- Training: Taking classes in emergency preparedness, response capabilities, first aid, CPR, fire suppression, and search and rescue procedures.
- Volunteer service: Engaging individuals in volunteer activities that support first responders, disaster relief groups, and community safety organizations. Everyone can do something to support local law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, community public health efforts, and the four stages of emergency management: prevention, mitigation, response and recovery efforts.
Citizen Corps also brings together the following community volunteer resources:
- first responders
- firefighters
- emergency health care providers
- law enforcement
- emergency managers
Citizen Corps helps people across America take a more active role in crime prevention, support the emergency medical community, and be better trained in a wide range of emergency preparedness and disaster response activities. The events after Hurricane Katrina and during the past few years have motivated many Americans to want to help others more and to strengthen their communities to be safer, stronger, and better prepared.
